There are different types of kidney stones. The most common are calcium stones composed of calcium oxalate, a naturally occurring substance found in food. Struvite stones are another type, which form quickly and largely in response to an infection in the urinary tract. Uric Acid stones form in people who don’t drink enough fluids or eat a diet too high in protein. Lastly there are Cystine stones, which form in those with a disease that causes their kidneys to release too much of an amino acid.
